Kyzkolysay Formation

Kyzkolysay Fm

Period:
Silurian

Age Interval:
Upper Wenlock, N4

Province:
Nuratau

Type Locality and Naming

Along the Kyzkolysay, North Nuratau Range. P.N. Podkopaev et al. in 1961 (1964f.). The age and extent of the formation were refined by E.V. Chukarov et al. (1966f.) and Z.M. Abduazimova et al. (1989f.; 11; 1996f.). Stratotype at Kyzkolsay.

Synonym: Kyzkolysay Suite, Кызколысайская св.

Lithology and Thickness

Thinly bedded, dark gray (to black) claystone (argillites), argillaceous slates with subordinate layers (3-5 cm, rarely 10-15 cm) of organogenic, thinly bedded clayey limestones and calcareous silty claystone (aleuropelites). Thickness 15-20, up to 50 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The lower boundary of the formation is unknown

Upper contact

The upper boundary is not reliably established. Judging by the regular replacement of organic residue complexes in the section, its relationship with the Ludlovian part of the East Daristan Fm was stratigraphically normal (165).

Regional extent

North Nuratau Range, occurring in the form of tectonic scales within the Mikhin-Daristanskaya structure. The Kyzkolysay Fm in the accepted span corresponds to the lower part of the Urtakul Fm in the understanding of I.A. Kim. The carbonate part of the section, included by P.N. Podkopaev (1964) and I.A. Kim (1987) in the Kyzkolysay Fm, belongs to the carbonate shallow-water type of section and is included in the Urtakul Fm (see).

Fossils

Contains graptolites - Testograptus testis (Barr.), Monoclimacis flumendosae (Gort.), Monograptus flemingi (Salter.) and others, characteristic of the upper Wenlock; chitinozoa - Eisenackitina oviformis (Eis.), E. dolioliformis Umn., Linochitina erratica (Eis.), known in the Wenlock of many regions of the world.

Age

On the State Geol Map-500 of Uzbekistan (460), it is assigned to the Lower Silurian.
